What is a Self-Discovery & Transformative Life Coach?

 

In this blog I’m sharing what makes transformational life coaching different to life coaching and other kinds of coaching. As a summary, unlike traditional coaching, which might focus on improving specific skills or hitting performance targets, transformational life coaching is about deeper, lasting change - helping you shift your mindset, beliefs and identity so you can be more you in this world. There are a few theories and ideas that have contributed to the development of transformational coaching from Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs and Carl Rogers' person-centred approach, but at its heart, transformational life coaching is about helping you live a life that feels true to you.

 

What is Transformational Life Coaching Really About?

Transformational life coaching is about creating space for self-awareness, personal growth and finding your own way forward. It’s not just about solving problems - it’s about recognising patterns and beliefs that might be holding you back and shifting them in a way that feels right. Through open conversations, thought-provoking questions and gentle steps forward, you can move past limitations and step into the most you version of yourself.

Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs: How It Fits In

Maslow’s famous pyramid of needs is a great way to understand personal growth. It’s made up of five levels:

  1. Basic Needs – Food, water, and shelter - the essentials for survival.

  2. Safety Needs – Feeling secure and stable in life.

  3. Love and Belonging – Relationships, friendships and community.

  4. Esteem Needs – Confidence, recognition and self-worth.

  5. Self-Actualisation – Becoming the best version of yourself.

Transformational coaching often focuses on the top levels - helping you build deeper trust and confidence, break thought patterns and find greater alignment. It’s about moving beyond self-doubt and living each day with self-assurance.

Carl Rogers believed that people thrive in a space where they feel seen, heard and accepted. That’s exactly what transformational coaching is about. It’s a judgment-free space where you can explore who you are and what you want without fear of being criticised. Through open conversations, gentle questions and reflection, I help you connect with yourself, to rediscover what’s important to you and make gentle shifts to weave these discoveries into your everyday and feel more aligned.
